Community Advisers to be selected

DeKALB | The Community Adviser selection process is currently underway and decisions will be made by Monday, when letters will be sent out to the candidates letting them know if they got the job or not.

The process began March 1, when applications became available online. Candidates had until last Friday to complete the application and upload an essay expressing the candidates’ interest in the CA position. The candidates are also required to turn in two personal and one staff reference by today.

After turning in all required paperwork, candidates were contacted to attend one of three group sessions, lasting for three-and-a-half hours, where they were interviewed and required to partake in activities to help Housing and Dining with its decision on which candidates would make the best fit for the role.

All of this work may seem discouraging to some, but not for others such as Michael Kelly, freshman biology major, who is among the many candidates hoping to become a CA next fall.

“I think that it would be a great opportunity to get involved with the campus, save money and meet new people,” Kelly said about his reasoning to apply for the position.

Samantha Cella, freshman pre-nursing major, agreed with Kelly that there are many benefits to the job, not only pay-wise, but developmentally and socially.

“I’d get to interact with people that I wouldn’t normally get to interact with and be in a leadership position,” Cella said. She also said if given the position, she felt she could make a difference in her community.

These benefits include room and board for a single room, the titanium meal plan ($100 per week), on-campus telephone, cable and a $700 stipend for first-year staff. This compensation package value exceeds $10,500 per academic year, according to the Housing and Dining Web site. Other benefits include developing leadership, organizational and communication skills.
