NIU’s Top 10 Moneymakers

Ever wonder who the highest-paid NIU employees are?

Here are NIU’s top 10 salaried positions, which made a combined $4.3 million in the 2007 fiscal year.

WHO?: John G. Peters

President of NIU (Office of the President)

SALARY: $304,260

STARTING DATE: June 1, 2000

WHAT HE DOES: Peters oversees all workings within the university. He talks to legislatures to get state and federal funding for NIU. He also is a liaison between the Board of Trustees and NIU faculty.

WHO? Joseph D. Novak

Head football coach, Athletics

SALARY: $280,500

STARTING DATE: Jan. 1, 1996

WHAT HE DOES: Novak recruits both assistant coaches and athletes, while overseeing all workings dealing with the NIU Huskies football team. He also organizes practices and his staff, and designs plays.

WHO? James J. Phillips

Associative vice president/director of Intercollegiate Athletics

SALARY: $257,496

STARTING DATE: Aug. 30, 2004

WHAT HE DOES: Phillips oversees all workings and faculty within the Intercollegiate Athletics, which includes 17 Division I sports teams. He also helps with fundraising for athletics and oversees the department.

WHO?: Raymond W. Alden III

Executive vice president and provost

STARTING DATE: July 1, 2006

WHAT HE DOES: Alden oversees all academic matters — meaning all seven different deans of the different colleges report to him. He is also in charge of Academic Affairs. Other roles of his include planning courses and deciding what degrees should be offered.

WHO?: Eddie R. Williams

Executive vice president, chief of Operations, Finance and Facilities

STARTING DATE: Sep. 8, 1970

WHAT HE DOES: Williams is in charge of all budgeting and financing matters. He also oversees all workings with funding for the physical maintenance of the campus, including building and road upkeep.

Dean of the College of Law

STARTING DATE: Aug. 1, 1997

WHAT HE DOES: Pernell oversees all matters within the College of Law.

Dean of the College of Business

WHAT SHE DOES: Schoenbachler oversees all matters within the College of Business.

WHO?: Malcolm Lee Morris

Associate dean and professor of the College of Law

WHAT HE DOES: Morris helps the dean of the College of Law with management within the college.

WHO?: Joseph E. Grush

Acting dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

STARTING DATE: Aug. 17, 1974

WHAT HE DOES: Grush oversees all working matters within the College of the Liberal Arts and Sciences. As acting dean, he is only filling this position temporarily until a permanent dean is found for the College of LA&S.

Anne C. Kaplan

Vice president of Administration and University Outreach

STARTING DATE: Jan. 8, 1974

WHAT SHE DOES: Kaplan oversees and is in charge of the four regional campuses, and all four campuses report to her. She also oversees the computer and telephone operations.

Job descriptions are only for the official’s primary role on campus. Ricardo Patton, who was recently hired as the NIU men’s basketball coach, may or may not be among the top 10. His contract information has not yet been released. Rob Judson, the previous men’s basketball coach, was listed with a salary of $166,116.
