Baseball splits against Bradley

PEORIA, Ill. | If you don’t like the weather in the Land of Lincoln, wait about five minutes; it’ll change.

The NIU baseball team found that out in a double header Wednesday at Bradley.

NIU split the seven-inning twin bill, winning game one 9-3 and dropping the night cap 5-4.

The soggy conditions were in stark contrast to the sun that basked Ralph McKenzie Field in 80 degree warmth this weekend.

But the damp weather didn’t bog down the MAC leading Huskie offense. NIU (12-8) pounded out 13 hits in the first game and burst out of the gate with a four run first inning that was interrupted by a 29 minute rain delay.

“It was important to get these games in,” NIU coach Ed Mathey said. “We’ve got school to keep up with and if we don’t play here we’ve got to talk about make up games.”

Junior left fielder Jeff Thomas was 3 for 5 with two runs, senior designated hitter Scott Simon was 3 for 4 with three RBI and sophomore shortstop Bobby Stevens collected a pair of hits and an RBI.

Freshman second baseman Jordin Hood entered the game in the fifth after a 1:31 minute rain delay and promptly blasted his third home run of the season. Hood was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Sophomore Andy Deain (2-1) came on in relief to pick up the win and junior Danny Reed extended his NIU best hitting streak to 15 games.

Bradley (11-8) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game two, before NIU posted a four run sixth inning highlighted by junior third baseman Jesse Seykora’s bases-loaded three-run double.

“We battled back in the sixth,” Mathey said. “Jesse had a big hit, Scotty was intentionally walked and Danny has been as hot as anyone. We just couldn’t get that tying run in.”

NIU was unable to scratch across a tying run in the top of the seventh and the 5-4 loss snaps a Mathey era best six-game winning streak.
