Super safe sunday
February 2, 2007
DeKALB | While Bears fans will be watching their television sets Sunday night, DeKalb police will be watching the roads.
On Feb. 4, DeKalb police officers will be conducting a roadside safety check within the city.
Officers working this detail will be looking for drivers who are driving under the influence of alcohol, transporting open alcoholic containers, driving on suspended or revoked drivers’ licenses or operating unsafe vehicles, said Chief Bill Feithen.
As part of the “You Drink and Drive. You Lose.” campaign, the roadside safety check will be funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The DeKalb Police Department will be a part of the checks, but will not have more officers than usual on patrol next Sunday.
“We’re not going to staff extra guys,” said Lieutenant Jim Kayes of the DeKalb Police Department. “[The checks] are funded by a grant. Normally it wouldn’t be so different.”
Kayes compared this Super Bowl to when the Chicago White Sox won the World Series.
“The weather was not that bad [in 2005],” Kayes said. “Students were out, but [on Sunday] you won’t see that many people out on foot.”
