Accountancy students offer tax return help

DeKALB | The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is offering free tax return help for NIU students and residents of DeKalb.

VITA is offering assistance in two sessions. The first session starts today at Founders Memorial Library and lasts until March 2. The second session will start March 21 and last until April 13. The tax assistance will only be available on Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The gap between sessions is due to spring break.

“The assistance for filing taxes will come from accounting students who took a tax class,” said accountancy graduate student Kurt Sanders. “These students also are certified through VITA.”

Students can file their taxes for reasons other than just getting money back.

“Filing your taxes now is a great idea to do before financial aid is due in March,” Sanders said.

Sanders also said that not only NIU students, but DeKalb residents as well, can come out and get assistance.
