Winter weather contributes to a number of crashes in, around NIU campus

DeKALB | Although no injuries were reported, a four-vehicle crash is one of many over the past few days.
While it is not certain if this collision was due to the weather, poor driving conditions are a main cause for collisions that occur in this kind of weather.
DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen said the volume of cars on the road in DeKalb is down. Despite the lack of drivers, some accidents have occurred.
“We’ve only had a total six, none being serious, since last night,” Feithen said.
To avoid accidents, Feithen recommends people stay home.
“We’ve had a lot of people follow that advice,” Feithen said. “We had a lot of places close. Kishwaukee Community College is closed, NIU night classes were canceled, two of the largest medical clinics were closed as a result [of the weather].”
Feithen had advice for commuters who still have to take to the road for the next few days.
“I recommend that they increase their distance between vehicles,” Feithen said. “Some of the accidents today were of a result of that. [Drivers should] keep their speed lower than the speed limit, keep headlights on and when trying to pull out into traffic, give yourself extra time; You do not have the traction you do on dry pavement.”
Before driving, Feithen said people should inspect their cars well and ensure the vehicle has a good set of tires.
With the inclement weather expected to continue through the night, Feithen said he does expect an increase in accidents.
“I think people will stay in tonight,” Feithen said. “There’s not going to be a lot of people coming out. I recommend they settle in with a good book, kick back and relax.”
