Melting snow + old building + art projects = frustrated students

Beware the ides of March.

Most people cannot stand this brisk winter and can’t wait until it’s over, but several students in the sculpture art department are concerned about the impending spring. Students are concerned their hard work could be damaged by the rush of melting snow pouring water into the Pleasant Street Art Annex.

Landlords have installed a new gutter system hoping to deal with the runoff of excess water, Tio said.

“We going to know how the new gutters work with the spring thaw in March.,” said Adrian Tio. “There is a lot of electricity in there. It’s an old building, it needs work.”

During the fall semester, the lease the university has for the space was renewed for another five years, said School of Art director Adrian Tio said.

“As long as the landlord shows good faith, the university will work with them,” he said.

No input was procured from students at the site or from the School of Art.

“Its unconscionable that they would renew the lease on that building,” said Hunter Logan, third-year graduate art student.

Officials from the Division of Planning and Services that manage the off-campus leases were not available for comment.
