Softball goes 3-2 in sunny California

DeKALB | A weekend trip to the University of California-Santa Barbara’s mini-tournament benefitted the NIU softball team in multiple ways.

For starters, the Huskies enjoyed going 3-2 on the road.

With junior pitcher Taryn Hagemann not available due to injury, NIU (5-4) looked to freshman pitcher Kate Greenough for a presence on the mound.

“She did a great job all weekend,” NIU head coach Donna Martin said.

NIU started its trip on Friday with a 4-2 win over Santa Clara (1-12). Several hours later the Huskies picked up a 5-2 victory against the University of Texas-San Antonio (5-10).

After falling 3-0 to UC-Santa Barbara (8-3) Saturday morning, the Huskies rebounded to secure another win over Santa Clara in the afternoon session, rallying from a 5-3 deficit in the seventh inning to pick up the victory.

Unfortunately for NIU, a sweep of UT-San Antonio was not in the cards, as the Huskies lost to the Roadrunners 6-1 Sunday morning.
