Fire department sounds alarm in Stevenson

DeKALB | Lucinda Avenue was blanketed with the sounds of sirens Monday shortly after 2 p.m.

Three fire trucks, one police squad car and Fire Chief Lanny Russell were present at Stevenson South. After the fire department’s arrival, the fire alarm was sounded and students were told to evacuate the building.

Students waiting outside the building were unsure of the exact reason the alarm had been sounded.

“I smelled something burning on my floor,” said Kasimir Kedzierski, a computer science major and resident of the 12th floor of Stevenson Tower C.

Other students noticed the burning smell in different parts of the building.

Luther Carraza, a sophomore business administration major, and Stephanie Olson, a sophomore math major, were both eating in Stevenson at the time. They claimed to have smelled gas or a burning odor and then noticed that firemen had been called into The Corner Store in Stevenson. After investigating The Corner Store, the fire alarm was then sounded.

Dan Williams, who was working at The Corner Store, confirmed that he did smell a burning odor but that it had come through the vents and was not located inside the store.

About a half hour after the fire department’s arrival, students were allowed to return to the building. Russell explained that the smell was burnt paper from the welding shop in the basement. The statement was later confirmed by workers on duty.
