Suicide prevention meeting Sunday

DeKALB | Students are encouraged to attend an informational suicide prevention meeting from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at University Plaza in the multi-purpose room.
“It’s a night to come for information on suicide prevention and awareness,” said Pat Mulheran, campus minister at the Newman Catholic Student Center. “We are going to have information available that helps others see warning signs in friends or other people [that] they spend a lot of time with.”
“Friends Helping Friends One Step at a Time” is being organized by the Justice and Social Action Team, a part of the student ministry team at the Newman Center. Mulheran said there will be counselors from NIU at the event as well as a spokesperson for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention who lost his own son to suicide.
“Our real goal is more to empower and educate all the young adults about signs they can see in each other,” Mulheran said. “[Suicide] is the no. 2 killer on college campuses.”
Students are involved in planning the event.
“[Suicide] is a real issue that is out there right now and it does happen,” said Emily Fuger, a senior geography major and event planner. “Everyone needs to do their part to help prevent it.”
Bryan Turner, a senior accounting major who is involved in the event’s planning, said many people deal with depression and they should know what help is available.
“There are so many resources and outlets here on campus that are available to students and sometimes they don’t even realize what is out there.”
