ITS could place ads

DeKALB | Information Technology Services is considering displaying advertisements on screen savers throughout the university’s computer labs.

“The ads would be displayed between slides of lab policies as a screen saver when machines are not in use in open labs,” said Charles Schumann, information technology manager of lab operations for ITS. Schumann said the capability to place the ads already exists, though there are still some technical issues to be worked out.

Because the computer labs are a student resource, Schumann said only organizations recognized by the Student Association will be allowed to advertise. Schumann said ITS would charge organizations $1 a day for each slide and limit the total advertisements each week to 10. Schumann said the associated costs for ITS to add the advertisements are very minimal and include paying a technician for the time it takes to upload the advertisements onto the network.

Displaying lab policies on the computers has been effective in increasing student awareness of certain policies, Schumann said. He added that one of the goals of the advertisements is to help increase attendance at events.

Mark Rhine, a sophomore accounting major, said he hopes the advertisements are funny and memorable.

“I’m fine with it as long as it is just a screen saver and doesn’t take away any of my time,” Rhine said.
