Majors fair helps with college path choices

One of the toughest choices a college student makes is deciding upon his or her major.

Many students change majors or minors many times in their college careers because they cannot find one that suits their needs and interests. For these students, the Exploring Majors Fair may help them make their decision.

The Exploring Majors Fair will take place today from noon to 4 p.m. in the Duke Ellington Ballroom in the Holmes Student Center and is open to all NIU students.

“The fair is designed for all students who want to find out more about majors, minors and other academic opportunities by allowing them the opportunity to investigate various curricular and career options in a centralized, open-house format,” said academic advisor Steven Barleen.

The fair will be a valuable learning ground for students and can save a lot of footwork.

“Students with and without majors can benefit by speaking with faculty and advisors about majors, minors, certificates and other academic opportunities in one spot rather than going all over campus,” Barleen said. “Additionally, the program benefits departments by providing an opportunity to showcase particular majors, minors and programs to a wide variety of NIU students.”

NIU has more than 50 majors and 60 minors available to students. There will be faculty representatives and advisors representing every academic department and opportunity on campus, Barleen said.

The fair is held every October. Last year, nearly 400 students were in attendance. This year the turnout is expected to be even better, Barleen said.
