Women’s soccer falling short of goals
October 9, 2006
DeKALB | What does the NIU women’s soccer team have in common with the Green Bay Packers?
I mean the Packers are 1-4. Don’t get me wrong, they can be great, but as of right now, Green Bay is deteriorating.
Kind of like the women’s soccer team.
The season this year has not gone as planned despite a lot of quality and character coming out of several of the players on the Huskie squad.
There have been phenomenal individual performances such as Karen Enockson. The junior is in the top two in each statistic in the MAC. Then there’s Lindsey Curnock, staying strong in goal with 37 saves this season.
And those are just the few of many.
There is no doubt the Huskies have had some excellent games as well. Games where they worked together and generated a positive outcome.
But, this season, the negatives outweigh the positives by far.
The Huskies are 3-8-2 overall and 2-4 in the MAC. Sure, miracles can happen. But what’s the likelihood, with five games left, that the team doesn’t end up in the bottom half of the standings?
Sure, there have been upsets, but let’s welcome reality with open arms. It’s just about time for the team to say goodbye to this year’s season.
And now for the real question: why are the Huskies not doing well when there is a tremendous amount of talent on the team?
Could it be the continual disappearance of head coach Marci Miller? Yes, they have assistant coach Paul Jobson who is more than qualified. But wouldn’t it be nice for the team to have its head coach?
Or could it possibly be that they are just a young team trying to learn how to work together? One season is not always enough to make magic happen. But mustering only three wins falls short of even a miniscule spark of magic.
There are many possibilities as to why the team is not up to its full potential. And those might be the few reasons to explain why the Huskies aren’t on an unbreakable winning streak like the men’s soccer team.
Having such a young team will eventually be beneficial for the women’s soccer program though.
Next year the Huskies will still have Enockson, Curnock, second leading scorer Lisa Maier, incredible midfielder Thea Johnson and the rest of the Huskie line.
Maybe head coach Miller will be here to stay.
In that case, NIU women’s soccer has an advantage for the upcoming seasons. The team has promise and it will make magic.
