Despite loss, Wolfe climbs record book
September 10, 2006
DeKALB | Despite another NIU football loss, Huskies’ running back Garrett Wolfe continued to move up in the record books.
The fifth-year senior is now third on NIU’s career rushing chart after recording 196 yards on 24 carries Saturday. Wolfe now has 3,603 career yards. Only the San Diego Chargers’ back-up running back Michael Turner’s 4,941 yards and Mark Kellar’s 3,745 yards outrank Wolfe in the NIU record books.
Saturday also was Wolfe’s 16th-career 100-yard game in 22 total games played, and fifth consecutive outing with 170-plus rush yards.
Aside from the yardage totals, Wolfe now has 41 career touchdowns after scoring two on Saturday. He ranks second behind Turner’s 48 from 2000-03.
Mr. Consistency
NIU kicker Chris Nendick has scored at least one point in each of his 26 games played during his NIU career. That mark ties John Ivanic’s school record for consecutive games scoring.
Smacking through each of his two extra point attempts Saturday, Nendick has now converted 96 consecutive attempts, and is 103-for-104 in his career.
The official attendance is …
Though multiple sections of the east stands were filled because of High School Band Day, one could not acquire tickets for the student section as of game time.
However, the official attendance for Saturday’s game was 19,341 amidst a 72-degree temperature and 12 to 17 mile-per-hour winds.
Huskie Stadium’s capacity was bumped down to 28,000 in 2004 after the bleachers in the north end zone were removed.
Scout’s honor
NIU’s second-straight loss to an Ohio school this season was viewed by scouts from the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs sitting in the press box.
As of Sunday, Wolfe was ranked No. 9 in ESPN.com’s latest Heisman watch, and has rushed for 367 yards and two touchdowns this season while registering one receiving score against OSU.
