A night for tequila — without the hangover

By Stephanie Kohl

DeKALB | Tequila will not make any clothes come off tonight, but Jesus Romero of Taxco Restaurant in Sycamore and El Gran Agave Tequila Bar will speak on the history of tequila as part of Latino Heritage Month.

Romero will speak at 7 p.m. in the Latino Resource Center, 515 Garden Road. The event is free and open to all students.

“We asked Romero to speak because he is the owner of Taxco Restaurant,” said Susana Das Neves, assistant director of the LRC. “He has a great selection of tequila and he just expanded his restaurant to include these tequila haciendas [houses].”

In addition to the presentation on the history of tequila, Romero will show some tequila bottles from his restaurant’s collection, though no tequila will be served at the event. He also will bring in an agave plant and show how the juice is extracted to make tequila. A question and answer session will follow.

The presentation will include information on tequilas made in different tequila haciendas, which are similar to beer breweries. Depending on the hacienda the tequila comes from, one bottle can cost up to $1,000, Dasneves said.
