50-cent drafts to end Friday

By Janessa Ensinger

DeKALB | Last call for 50-cent drafts will be Friday, September 22.

Pamphlets on the new law were printed September 12 after the city council approved legislation to raise the minimum liquor price.

Pamphlets can be picked up at the City Clerk’s Office in the DeKalb Municipal Building, Room 213.

The new prices are double the old prices; 8 cents per ounce of beer or wine and $1 per ounce for hard liquor.

“I don’t see this having much effect,” said City Clerk Donna Johnson. “The only thing it should stop are the sale promotions.”

City law states that any new law or ordinance must either be printed in a newspaper or be available to the public in the form of a pamphlet. The new legislation goes into effect 10 days after it has been made public.

Johnson said all businesses holding a liquor license have been sent a letter regarding the new prices and when they will go into effect.

The Liquor Commission will meet at 7 p.m. to discuss the Reading Day legislation that was sent back to the commission at last week’s city council meeting.

The city will monitor adherence to the minimum price by looking through the sales promotions advertisements and visiting the establishments periodically, said City Attorney Norma Guess.
