Women’s soccer loses Eliadis to injury
August 28, 2006
An air of uncertainty surrounds a key component of the women’s soccer team: senior mid-fielder Elaine Eliadis will be out indefinitely because of an injury to her knee.
According to NIU’s Sports Information Department, it is not entirely known when the Orland Park native suffered the injury, but it is suspected to have occurred some time during the preseason.
As of right now, no time table has been set for her return.
Putting it on the board
After two games this season, the men’s soccer team looks like an offensive powerhouse.
Thusfar, the Huskie offense leads the MAC in goals per game with two and assists per game with three per contest.
New hire
The NIU cross country and track and field team recently gained a new assistant coach.
Former Concordia University at St. Paul head men’s and women’s track and field coach Mark McConeghey joined the team back on Aug. 17 and should be a huge boost to the program, said coach Connie Teaberry.
“Coach McConeghey is coming to Northern Illinois with great experience,” Teaberry said.
A few for the wall
Four NIU baseball players were recognized for their play during this summer’s Central Illinois Collegiate League.
Infielder Scott Simon nabbed the Mike Schmidt league MVP award by batting .337 with 63 hits and 98 total bases.
Huskie pitcher Matt German also received the Fireman of the Year award. In 22 appearances, German had a 0.73 ERA.
Shortstop Bobby Stevens also received tournament MVP honors, while pitcher Trevor Feeney was named top pitcher for the second half of the season.
Lacrosse to hold meeting
Those interested in joining NIU’s lacrosse team can attend an informational meeting at 9 p.m. Thursday at the Student Recreation Center.
The team finished second at the Wisconsin-Whitewater tournament last year and hosted the first high school camp in the team’s 29 year history over the summer.
“This is the best team we’ve fielded in ten years,” said team president Aaron Vermedal. “We have a lot of new guys that are really interested in the team. Recently, we just joined a new conference with great competition. We’re planning our 20th annual fall classic and expect 6 teams in the field that weekend. All those things contribute to how our team is really growing.”
