Sig Eps Tugs champs

Sigma Phi Epsilon beat Pi Kappa Alpha to win Tugs 2006 Friday night.

The first rope lasted 20 minutes and went to Sig Eps, while the second rope also lasted 20 minutes and went to the Pikes.

The third and final rope was the deciding factor of the match. Sig Eps took the rope in 16 and a half minutes.

“We’re going to try to repeat,” said Sig Ep President Mark Michaels, senior exercise physiology major. “We found a formula, and I think we’re going to stick with that formula. It’s hard work and dedication.”

All of the Pikes’ and Sig Eps’ intense hard work and practice showed through the tuggers.

“We want it for these guys; they worked from last year in the gym,” Michaels said. “They worked hard for it, especially the seniors; they deserve it.”

Though the Sig Ep house hosts men’s Tugs as their philanthropy, 2005 was the first year the house won a Tugs championship.

“I’m just glad we got another one for our seniors,” Michaels said.

Tau Kappa Epsilon took third place over Phi Kappa Sigma after two matches, lasting 10 and 20 minutes each.

“[You do tugs] just to be involved in something bigger than yourself that you can affect in a positive way,” said senior psychology major Jon Pirc. “The match was hard but we caught them early and used the momentum swing.”

Spectators got into the event by cheering for the houses.

In addition to students, some parents and siblings also came to support their tuggers Friday night.

“It’s a lot of pride,” Pirc said. “You get a lot of respect doing Tugs.”
