NIU will find out what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real when former MTV “Real World” cast member Ruthie speaks to students on Wednesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium.

The event is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board Unity in Diversity Committee.

Ruthie Alcaide, from MTV’s eighth season of the “Real World,” set in Hawaii, was known for her drinking problems and stint in rehab during the filming of the show.

Alcaide will talk about drug and alcohol abuse throughout her 45-minute speech and field questions from audience members.

“Everyone knows what happened on the show, so it’s a big deal having her speak about the issue,” said Hardeep Rooprai, assistant vice president of concepts and design for CAB. “It’ll be interesting to see what she’s done since the show.”

Past speakers from MTV to visit NIU include Irene from “Real World Seattle” and Trishelle from “Real World Las Vegas.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the event is free to students and faculty.
