Fountain returns … future unknown

By Jamie Rogers and Michelle Gilbert

Students may have noticed the once-broken Cole Hall fountain running Monday.

The fountain was installed as part of a million dollar water management project about five or six years ago, starting at the East Lagoon and traveling to central campus, said Bob Albanese, associate vice president of Finance and Facilities.

The fountain itself was built about three years ago, and it took about $400 or $500 to fix it, Albanese said.

“It was plugged up and a line was broken,” Albanese said. “We went in and cleared it out, repaired the line, got it up and running, and we’ll see how long it runs now.”

From the start, Albanese said the fountain has not worked very well.

Problems can arise when there is a lot of rainfall that can plug the lines and make the pump work harder until it burns out.

The fountain itself has a minimal cost to run.

“[It’s] not that expensive. It was more figuring out what we needed to do that was the hard part,” Albanese said. “We have a better idea of how it operates.”

Some students didn’t know a fountain existed by Cole Hall until it was running again Monday.

“I’m really glad they have got the fountain working,” said Elizabeth Spencer, junior public health major. “I always look at the area when I walk by, so I was wondering when they were going to start it again.”

Mechanical corrections were made on the fountain to prevent the same problem that caused the malfunction originally from occurring again.

Albanese feels only time will tell. Plans have not been put together at this point for if the fountain has more problems in the future.

“Walking across campus, it is nice to have everything up and running,” Albanese said. “[The fountain is] such a nice aesthetic piece on campus.”
