Faculty member wins award for logo

By Jamie Rogers

Andrew Byrom, assistant professor of visual communication, received notice that a logo he designed was going to be published in a book containing the nation’s best logos.

Byrom took a few minutes to sit down with the Northern Star and discuss his career and the honor he received.

Northern Star: How long have you been working for NIU?

Andrew Byrom: I moved here from London six years ago to work at NIU. It was kind of a culture shock to go from London to DeKalb.

NS: How long have you been doing graphic design?

AB: I have been doing graphic design for 12 years. I design book jackets for Penguin Books, McGraw-Hill and Routledge. I also do graphic work for individuals.

NS: What honor did you receive recently?

AB: I designed a logo for the Jack Olson Gallery here at NIU. The logo I designed is being put into American Corporate Identity 2007. It is a book which contains the best logos in America from 2006. The book will be available in the fall.

NS: What other honors have you received?

AB: I won an award for one of my graphic design projects from the American Institute of Graphic Arts. It is the biggest graphic design contest in the world.

NS: Are there any upcoming changes that will be taking place in your life?

AB: Yes, around June or July I will be moving to Long Beach, Calif. to teach. I am sad to be leaving NIU.

NS: Do you have a Web site so people can view your graphic designs?

AB: Yes, www.andrewbyrom.com.
