Simpson performs for screaming crowd

Hip-hugger jeans and sparkly T-shirts adorned the Convocation Center Wednesday as Ashlee Simpson stole NIU for a night.

Simpson was virtually dancing alone in the Convo as fans barely filled the floor and lower level.

Final attendance numbers were not available at the end of the show, said Kevin Selover, marketing manager for the Convo.

The low turnout didn’t stop fans from enjoying themselves.

“When she hits the stage, you’ll hear the loudest shrill ever,” Selover said.

Fans screamed at the top of their lungs when Simpson took the stage and played a 14-song, 70-minute set relying heavily on her radio hits.

Simpson’s six-piece band combined a mixture of punk, rock and pop throughout the set while her two back-up singers aided in harmonies and accompanying vocals.

NIU students were peppered among the audience of mainly pre-teen and teenage girls.

“I like her music, voice and her clothes,” said 12-year-old Plainfield resident Molly Augulia. “I like to do my hair like her.”

Males were few and far between.

“The only guys here are the ones who are stuck with their girlfriends,” Selover said.

Throughout the show, Simpson relied on audience interaction by pulling three female fans on stage to sing along and dance to “L.O.V.E.” and a male audience member was invited up to dance with Simpson during “La La.”

Glow sticks and cell phones illuminated the floor during “Shadow” as purple and pink lights engulfed the stage.

Simpson’s bassist spent a good amount of time running around other band members, standing on speakers and playing to the crowd.

Simpson closed the night with a one-song encore, singing “Boyfriend” as the Convo erupted in approval.

Chris Megert opened the show playing a six-song, 25-minute set between his piano and guitar and tried to joke with the crowd.

Megert garnered the biggest reaction during his set when he performed a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You.”
