Students sing for free concert tickets
March 23, 2006
“Undiscovered” karaoke singers competed for two Ashlee Simpson concert tickets in the Holmes Student Center’s Diversions Lounge Wednesday night.
NS*Radio and the Campus Activities Board hosted the event.
Lindsey Stouffer was the first to perform with “Pieces of Me.” Judges gave her credit for being the first to perform, but asked her to sing louder.
“Looked like your first time up there, but this is my first time judging.” Mike Costello said.
Justina Fulara, the third performer, received a three from Steve Carison. In response to the low score, someone in the audience shouted, “We don’t need no Simon Cowell.”
Annie Kane was the fifth performer of the night. She was supported by a guitarist she said she found on the street. Her performance of “La, La” was reminiscent of Ashlee Simpson’s lip syncing episode on “Saturday Night Live,” as she did not know most of the words.
Halfway through her performance she began to make up her own lyrics.
“I’m a biology and chemistry major … I just want to go see a concert, I’m as broke as a joke.” She sang. “Can you tell I’ve never listened to Ashlee Simpson in my life.”
The competition came down to a battle between a blonde and a brunette version of Ashlee Simpson.
Dark haired Megan Halverson performed “Undiscovered.” During her performance she stepped down off the stage to sing to the judges, and ended up singing without a microphone.
The judges said she sounded the most like Ashlee Simpson, and also had the longest song of the night. They also said she had attitude.
Halverson received three perfect scores from the judges.
Blonde Sarah Streedwas last to perform, singing “Pieces of Me.” Judges complimented her on a near flawless performance, as well as singing without paper.
Daniel Aguaya told Streed, “Two great performances at the end. I’m giving you a 10 also.”
Halverson won 48 to 46.5.
“I’m so excited. I love Ashlee Simpson,” she said. “I never really sing in front of people.”
The real Ashlee Simpson will perform at the Convocation Center March 27 at 7 p.m. Tickets will be on sale until then and NS*Radio will be giving out free tickets during the coming week.
