Executive election winners announced
March 30, 2006
The results are in as 410 students voted, the 2006 Student Association and Campus Activities Board have been selected.
Adam Novotney and Dion Smith have been elected SA and CAB presidents, respectively.
Last year 1,321 students voted in the executive elections. This year less than 2 percent of the student body took part.
SA vice presidential candidate Aaron Funfsinn lost to Michael Johns by 181 votes in the only contested race in the spring election.
“I’m not disappointed. I wasn’t interested in gaining power. I felt if people wanted a new choice they could have elected one.” Funfsinn said.
In order to ensure the validity of the ballots over the two-day election period, the ballot boxes were taken to an undisclosed location by the election commissioner when the polls closed Tuesday.
When the last votes were made at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, the elections commissioner and the board of elections met and carried the ballot boxes to Williston Hall where they were counted by a machine. After running the ballots through the machine, the commissioner and board received a printout of the results. The results were taken to the SA office to be posted.
Latoya White, election commissioner and a corporate communication major said only one ballot was invalid because it was not signed by the poll workers.
If only one position on the ballot is filled out incorrectly the rest of the votes may be counted as valid.
White said there was a .2 percent margin of error due to some invalid votes. She said a couple of students voted for George W. Bush and the entire Simpson family.
“I think [the voting process] went well overall, a lot because of our new ballot boxes,” White said.
The executive’s inauguration ceremony will take place May 5. They will not take office until May 15. Each executive will serve a one-year term.
If for any reason the presidents cannot fulfill the duties they would be replaced by the vice presidents. The vice presidents would in turn be replaced by the treasurer until the senate chooses a replacement.
