Lee, McGhghy to NFL Europe

By Sean Ostruszka

Frankfurt, Germany, isn’t exactly a top Spring Break vacation spot. But for two former Huskies it’s right where they want to be.

Rob Lee and Matt McGhghy will spend the entire spring playing football for the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europe.

A six-foot, 193-pound cornerback, Lee is listed as the No. 1 starter for the Galaxy. The former Huskie has spent the past two seasons on the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad.

Assigned to NFL Europe by the Detroit Lions, McGhghy is a back-up at both offensive guard spots.

The pair joins a growing list of ex-NIU football players to play in the league; among them quarterback Chris Finlen and cornerbacks Randee Drew and Duane Hawthorne.

Sickening loss

Despite a patch-work line-up the NIU gymnastics team was able to keep it close to defending MAC Champion Kent State on March 12.

With numerous gymnasts nursing injuries or sick with the flu, NIU coach Mark Sontag had to put together a line-up at the last second. The result was a narrow 193.950-193.300 loss.

“To be within six-tenths of Kent State with a bandaged line-up is really good,” Sontag said. “I feel a lot better after this meet than going in because I know we’ve got other gymnasts to count on.”

Despite the disadvantage, the Huskies were able to place three gymnasts in the top six scorers in every event.

Double Vision

Neither the men’s nor the women’s tennis team could garner a win over Spring Break and the similarities didn’t stop there.

After losing 5-2 to Colgate on Tuesday the women’s team joined the men’s for a match against North Florida. Both ended up losing 7-0.

The two teams put up the same scores Thursday as the women lost 4-3 to Jacksonville while the men lost to Florida A&M by the same score.

Swinging away

The NIU women’s golf team placed 12th out of 15 teams at the 20th Annual NIU Snowbird Invitational.

After shooting a 332 as a team on day, the Huskies bounced back on day two, improving by 10 strokes.

But an improved second day wasn’t enough to catch top team Bradley who put up scores of 309 and 300 to win the event.

The Braves’ Meaghan LeBlanc also took home the individual crown with rounds of 75 and 69.

Jackie Bailey was NIU’s top finisher as she tied for 30th with rounds of 82 and 78.

Despite not playing its best the NIU men’s golf team was able to take fourth at the El Diablo Invitational.

Nick Schenk earned his fourth straight top-10 finish as the senior shot rounds of 76, 73, and 74 to place ninth.

Remembering the season

The season may be over but the men’s basketball team is not done.

The Huskies will have their annual awards banquet tonight at the Convocation Center. Social hour starts at 5:30 p.m. while dinner begins at 7 p.m., followed by the program at 7:30 p.m.

NIU will also be recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches-Hillyard Champions Lucheon on March 31 in Indianapolis, Ind.
