TJ’s waiting for possible charges to be filed
March 31, 2006
Today, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Ron Matekaitis will make a decision as to what charges, if any, will be brought against TJ’s Accessories, 1220 W. Lincoln Highway.
“I am just waiting to hear from TJ’s representative,” Matekaitis said as of press time.
As soon as he receives that phone call a decision will be made, he said.
The store was shut down during Spring Break and was declared a public nuisance for its sale of questionable glass pipes.
TJ’s sold varied tobacco smoking products such as glass pipes, large water pipes and one-hitters, but did not sell any tobacco. The store also sold nitrous containers for whip cream and containers used for home concealment.
DeKalb police believe these products are more commonly being misused. “We look at the common usage and most people are not using these products the legal way,” said Lt. Jim Kayes.
The store was previously a retail store but changed the goods it sold. The store was not required to tell the city of the change, and so, the city was unaware of the products being sold for weeks after its opening, said Linda Wiggins, DeKalb Assistant City Manager.
The DeKalb City Council could enact a ban on glass pipes just as it currently bans tattoo parlors.
“We are moving in that direction,” Kayes said.
