Job fair attracts current, former students

Although Jon Harnick graduated from NIU with a degree in sociology, it didn’t stop him from coming back to the Spring Job Fair Wednesday at the Convocation Center.
“NIU wants you to find a job. It makes them look good,” Harnick said.
Harnick was one of many hoping to start a career. Although already an alumnus, he said NIU has still been very helpful in his search.
Information about the job fair was posted everywhere and many students were sent e-mails about the event.
Katy Johnson, a senior sociology major, said she found information about the fair in numerous places and read the tips given to her online. She also took her resume to Career Services but she thinks her career planning class was most helpful.
“The class really prepared us. We did interviews with one another like we were really being interviewed for a job,” said Erica Honeywood, a senior political science major.
Honeywood also found Career Services to be helpful.
Other students at the fair had advice for future atendees.
“I recommend younger students start looking early and research the companies,” said Matt Piekos, a senior economics major.
Students may find help with Career Service, but the real test is during the interview.
Someone who is energetic and has good values is important, said Brandon Sammons, a general manager at Finish Line and a recruiter at the fair.
Many recruiters agree the first impression is important and confidence is a plus.
“Just keep going for it,” Sammons said. “Look for the right person to help you.”
