Between July 2004 and December 2005, about 830 tickets were issued on campus each week.

The most common tickets were for not having NIU parking permits at $40 per ticket and overtime meter tickets at $10 per ticket.

These fines can be avoided by planning ahead when driving on campus. Proper permits must be displayed for all NIU lots and meters must be fed for the entire time the space is occupied.

Students also should remember that using flashers when illegally parked does not make it legal. Flashers can actually draw more attention the vehicle.

The Provost’s Task Force on Multicultural Curriculum Transformation will host a showing and discussion of the movie “Crash” from 3 to 6 p.m. Feb. 15 in the Campus Life Building, Room 100.

The Chicago Film Critics Association recently named “Crash” as the number one movie of 2005. “Crash” tells a story revolving around the daily collisions between stereotypes, and how these perceptions and judgments affect society.

The discussion will feature associate English professor Christoph Lindner, who will speak on the stylistic concepts of the film and LaVerne Gyant, director of the center for Black Studies, who will speak about race. Gyant said the film “really puts the issue of racism, sexism and all those ‘isms’ right in front of us.”

The main goal of the discussion is to explore ways to teach the issues presented in the film in the classroom, Litnder said.

The Unity in Diversity Steering Committee began its annual Theme Contest. Entries are due by 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20.

The theme must be 10 words or less and reflect the idea of Unity in Diversity. Applicants may submit more than one entry.

“The committee has been here a long time and is a venue to deal with issues on campus,” said Angie Dreessen, director of student involvement and leadership development.

The theme is the first part of the contest. A poster contest is incorporated into the winning theme later this semester.

The theme will be used to promote diversity awareness on campus and become part of the Unity in Diversity poster collection display in the Holmes Student Center.
