Breaking down the championships
February 21, 2006
With the MAC championships only 10 days away, it’s time to predict which wrestlers will come out on top in each weight class.
125: No. 13 Pat Castillo (NIU, 25-7). Runner-up: No. 12 Luke Smith (CMU, 18-5)
By far the deepest class in the MAC with four ranked wrestlers, including No. 15 Chad Sportelli (KSU) and No. 19 Sean Clair (EMU). Castillo gets the nod because of home court advantage and he has beaten everyone in this class before. Smith has been dominant at times, but also remarkably inactive in scoring against MAC opponents.
133: No. 12 Jason Borrelli (CMU, 21-6). Runner-up: No. 13 Mark Budd (BUFF, 33-4)
Almost too close to call this one. Borrelli has been rock solid and defeated Budd 2-1 in their previous meeting. But Budd is long, strong and quick and will severely test Borrelli.
141: No. 12 Josh Wooton (NIU, 26-6). Runner-up: Brandon Carter (CMU, 18-8)
As close to a lock as it gets, so bet the farm on this one. Wooton has an 18-1 career MAC record and has been blowing opponents off the mat with technical falls and pins. The only person who can beat Wooton this year is Wooton.
149: No. 5 Mark DiSalvo (CMU, 20-5). Runner-up: No. 14 Mike Grimes (NIU, 23-7)
DiSalvo is a returning MAC champion and All-American, but don’t expect him to just waltz off with the title. Grimes will push DiSalvo with his tenacious style and could pull the upset if DiSalvo doesn’t poke him in the eye 10 times again. EMU’s Jermain Thompson is athletic enough to be a spoiler.
157: Andy Keller (CMU, 21-8). Runner-up: Kurt Gross (KSU, 26-7)
With the departure of Ohio’s four-time All-American Jake Percival, 157 pounds is a weaker class this year. Gross’ showing against NIU was unimpressive and he is coming off a major decision walloping at the hands of Keller.
165: Johnny Galloway (NIU, 18-9). Runner-up: Mickey Moran (BUFF, 25-7)
Another head-scratching class with no clear-cut favorites. Galloway is by far the most athletically-gifted wrestler in the class, but he has struggled with consistency. If he keeps his focus and concentration, he will run away with the title.
174: No. 19 Brandon Sinnott (CMU, 24-9). Runner-up: Aaron Miller (KSU, 29-6)
Throw NIU’s Danny Burk into the mix and anyone could win this one. Sinnott has been ranked high this season in his first year as a starter. But Miller is big for his weight class, and should use his size to his advantage.
184: No. 16 Alex Camargo (KSU, 29-3). Runner-up: No. 19 Christian Sinnott (CMU, 20-11)
Camargo is one of the winningest wrestlers in Kent State history for a reason. Sinnott pushed him to the limit in their previous 2-1 bout and makes for an intriguing pairing.
197: No. 1 Wynn Michalak (CMU, 27-1). Runner-up: No. 3 Kyle Cerminara (BUF, 35-1)
These two shoe-in All-Americans will meet in the final, and it will be a bloodbath. Michalak pulled out a squeaker in their previous meeting to deal Cerminara his only loss. Probably the most anticipated re-match of the entire tournament. With 15 pins between them, they are men among boys.
Heavyweight: Who knows?
Without a doubt the hardest one to predict. It’s right up there with 125 pounds for depth. KSU’s Jermail Porter and Buffalo’s Harold Sherrell are giants who would make Godzilla think twice.
