Huskies handle E. Michigan

It was Senior Night for Eastern Michigan Thursday, but the Huskies proved to be bad house guests as NIU wrestling won 9-of-10 matches en route to a 28-6 victory.

The dominating performance by the Huskies (8-5-2 overall, 3-1-1 MAC) guaranteed the Eagles (6-9, 0-5) would finish last in the MAC with no conference victories. EMU senior Phillip Plowman was the lone scorer for the Eagles with a pin of NIU’s Chad Vandiver at 133 pounds.

“It’s a great morale booster for us,” NIU Coach Dave Grant said. “We were very dominant and gutted them out in certain spots where we needed to.”

The pre-match hype of the matches at 125 and 149 pounds lived up to its expectations. The 125-pound match featured NIU’s No.11-ranked Pat Castillo against No. 13-ranked Sean Clair. The match went back and forth into sudden death overtime, where a Castillo takedown earned him a 7-5 victory.

Another drama-filled match occurred at 149 pounds, where NIU’s No.

12-ranked Mike Grimes struggled offensively against Jermaine Thompson for much of the match. A Thompson takedown with 30 seconds remaining in the match gave him a 3-1 lead, but a quick escape and takedown by Grimes clinched the victory with only 15 seconds to go.

“I really didn’t attack him too well,” Grimes said. “I knew he wanted to stay back and get some single shots. But I knew I was in better shape than him, and by the third period, he was gassed.”

The Huskies took the remaining matches handily, with No. 12-ranked Josh Wooton continuing his torrid streak. The 141-pound junior won his seventh straight match with a 15-3 major decision of EMU’s Nick Conklin.

“It’s a big confidence boost that we can dominate teams,” Wooton said. “Being on this win streak, I’ve picked up a few major decisions and pins. I’m feeling really good going into the MAC Championships.”

The Huskies will wrap up their regular season schedule with two meets at 2 p.m. Sunday in Charleston, Ill. NIU’s first opponent will be host Eastern Illinois (3-10), who are led by 174-pound junior Kenny Robertson. Robertson has compiled a 22-6 record and 10 pins.

The second opponent of the day will be Northern Colorado (5-6). The Bears have lost three in a row, but are led by No. 19-ranked sophomore Reece Hopkin. The 197-pound Hopkin is 20-4 on the season.
