Donations to fund DHS improvements

At Tuesday’s District 428 School Board meeting officials discussed how to appropriate various donations, and later, an unexpected harangue from a parent caused the board to look into disciplinary matters.

An initial donation of $2,500, which will eventually total $10,000, from residents Steve and T.J. Irving will help DeKalb High School replace the auditorium’s aging speaker system. As well, David Hescott helped Lincoln Elementary School receive seven Compaq desktops and monitors from General Mills.

Further, a donation of $5,552.29 from Resource Bank will pay for new gym wall mats at the high school.

Wright Elementary School reported it was exceeding expectations for a plan to have reading and writing skills meet state standards 100 percent by 2009. According to the school, the students seem on track to meet that goal.

In the past year, the school has reported 88 percent of students meeting or exceeding state standards in reading, which places them second in the district, and 97 percent of third graders have met math standards. Due to this success, other schools in the district are studying the Wright school’s methodology.

Another important topic addressed in the school board meeting was the change of graduation requirements for high school students. Across the board they increased graduation requirements by .5 to 1 credit in each major subject area.

The floor was then opened to the public and Jen Krull, a parent of a kindergarten student, passionately spoke out about her disdain for the school’s inaction in protecting her child from bullies.

Her child was threatened by a bully saying he would bring a gun to school and kill her daughter the next day. Fortunately, when the boy was searched it was discovered he did not have a weapon or access to one through a parent.

Additionally, Krull claimed her child was repeatedly victimized on the bus and in the classroom. She said a boy, who had struck her child and other children several times has not been disciplined in an effective manner, nor has he been removed from the class.

Because her announcement was unexpected, officials said they would have to look further into the issue.
