Scott Stapp: The Great Divide
December 1, 2005
The former voice of Creed, Scott Stapp, takes his first stab at a solo career following the devastating break-up of the band which shocked Creed fans across the world.
Like many other lead singers from successful rock bands, Stapp opted to use his own name, like Rob Thomas and Gwen Stefani, as opposed to creating a new band, like Gavin Rossdale of Institute.
Stapp’s former bandmates, now members of Alter Bridge, have publicly ruled out a future Creed resurrection, which prompted Stapp to find his own place in the world of rock music. Originally expected to cater more toward pop fans, Stapp’s new music does little to distance him from his Creed past.
In his first single, also the title track from the album, “The Great Divide,” Stapp sings about his reasons to survive the hardships he has faced in his life. Resembling the very same sounds of Creed, many of the songs, such as “Fight Song,” “Hard Way” and “You Will Soar,” contain the same guitar riffs, complex subject matters and catchy choruses that managed to make Creed one of the dominant rock bands in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Stapp continues his lyrical stampede of emotion by discussing the darker portions of his life, in which he faced divorce, the break-up of Creed and the apparent questioning of his past religious faith.
Although Stapp fails to deviate from the music he helped create in Creed, he has managed to prove he has not forgotten how to create music with emotion.
