Viva La Bam character to visit
November 21, 2005
Don Vito, a character on the MTV show Viva La Bam, will visit NIU today at 6 p.m. to do … whatever he wants.
“Whatever happens, happens,” said Chris Turley, an outside regional sales manager for www.StudentCity.com. “There is no set itinerary, he’ll most likely sign autographs and pictures.”
Vito will arrive at the Holmes Student Center’s Carl Sandburg Auditorium around 6 p.m. and will entertain attendees for an hour. The event is free and about 500 students are expected to attend, Turley said.
Originally, the event was supposed to take place in the Huskies Den. However, the Den has a maximum capacity of 200 people.
“At other campuses attendance has been about six to eight hundred people,” said Chris Riddle, manager of the Huskies Den. “When we realized the possibility that capacity could be exceeded by lines, we decided to put him in the Sandburg auditorium.”
HSC security guards and University Police will be at the event to help control crowds, Riddle said.
StudentCity.com is an online company that assembles and markets a variety of Spring Break vacation packages. They are sponsoring the Don Vito Back to School Tour and also giving away a spring break package at each event.
Allison Klein, a senior physical education major and member of Sigma Kappa, is the NIU campus manager for StudentCity.com. Klein came to work with the Web site when Turley visited NIU to talk about spring break packages.
“I’ll be at the table when people first come in, to have them sign up for information about spring break packages,” Klein said. Klein said she expects the event to go well.
The tour began in late October and has made its way across nearly 40 cities.
“The events have ranged from 200 to 1,000 people throughout the hour,” Turley said. “Sometimes [Vito] sticks around, or goes and hangs out at the bars after and students follow.”
Riddle said he is a Viva La Bam fan and looks forward to Vito visiting NIU.
“It should be a lot of fun,” Riddle said. “Don Vito is perfect for the Student Center and what it represents in both fun and entertainment.”
