Martina McBride: Timeless

By Stephanie Szuda

For Martina McBride’s most recent album, she took a bunch of country classics and made them her own. An album full of cover songs may make some people cringe, but she did it and she did it well.

McBride went as early back as the ’50s with Hank Williams’ “You Win Again.” Most songs come from the ‘60s and ‘70s with Jeanne Pruett’s “Satin Sheets” and Sammi Smith’s “Help Me Make It Through The Night.”

She also covered Johnny Cash’s “I Still Miss Someone.” The song sounds more modern than the original and is probably the song on the album that underwent the most change. Although the song is so commonly covered, she may as well put her own spin on it. Her version still did the song justice. McBride’s voice has a wider vocal range than Cash’s, but she sang it similarly to Cash as opposed to how she sang on previous albums.

McBride’s version “’Til I Can Make It On My Own” was probably better than Tammy Wynette’s as McBride’s voice is better suited for the song than Wynette’s. McBride’s voice adds more grace to the track; her voice is smoother. Her version also has less production, only using a piano throughout most of the song.

The album showcases the range McBride can reach. Her voice is easily one of the best in country music today. I don’t think I could see LeAnn Rimes or even Reba McEntire doing this album and having the success McBride will. Even those only familiar with modern country would enjoy this album.
