Matt Pond PA: Several Arrows Later

By Collin Quick

If the “O.C.” delivered anything other than a teenage drama wrapped up in a nice hour-long package every week, it would be the name Death Cab for Cutie, which resident emo character Seth Cohen made a household name among teenagers looking for an indie band to call their own and hang on to for years to come.

The same can be said for Matt Pond PA.

After a bare bones acoustic version of Oasis’s “Champaign Supernova” played as background music in a recent episode, the light-tempo band left its mark on southern California and on the hearts of die-hard fans.

The band focuses its energy and musical prowess on clanging electric guitar riffs set over running acoustic guitar strums, snare pops and melodic bass lines.

A consistent down-trodden, depressive theme flows throughout the album as Pond sings of lost loves and better times against upbeat rhythms.

Pond’s soothing vocals add just the right depth and dimension to the songs, while not going overboard and ruining a song or holding himself back and lacking certain vocal elements.

The highlight of the album, “City Song,” features repetitive guitar arpeggios over a simple four-chord progression with beautifully layered strings and tight percussion leading the track to near perfection.

Looks like Cohen can add a new artist alongside Death Cab for Cutie the next time he makes a mix tape for that special girl who will undoubtedly break his heart.
