Bars offer overnight parking to patrons

Adrienne Beeman, a senior psychology major, doesn’t see the point in driving to a bar.
“I’m going to drink, so I know I won’t be able to drive home,” she said.
O’Leary’s Irish Pub and Grill, 260 E. Lincoln Highway, has no private parking, but there is plenty of public parking available, co-owner Debbie Witmer said.
Rules are posted in parking lots off Lincoln Highway, near O’Leary’s and Lord Stanley’s Annex, 142 E. Lincoln Highway.
People are allowed to park for two hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. From 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. unlimited parking is available. The public lot behind the Annex is closed from 2 to 6 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. The adjacent parking lot is closed from 2 to 6 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Fifteen-dollar tickets are issued to those who do not follow the posted guidelines. After 10 days, the ticket amount is doubled.
Senior sociology major Dave Emmart said signs are posted so people should just be careful of where they park.
When in doubt, ask the bar manager where it’s permissible to park, he said.
DeKalb Police Lt. Jim Kayes said tickets are issued but cars are rarely towed.
If a car is left for more than a couple of days or an event like Corn Fest is taking place, then it will be towed, he said.
Kayes said students should plan ahead and arrange a car pool with a designated driver or use the Late Night Ride Service offered by the University Police.
The service offers students rides every day of the week when school is in session. Calls are first taken around 10 p.m. and end around 5 a.m. and the program runs on a first-come-first-served basis. The Late Night Ride Service may be reached at 753-2222.
Dana Hempel, a senior journalism and corporate communication major, said driving is too big of a problem, so she usually walks with friends to local bars.
“I’d rather walk in heels than get a fine,” she said.
Lisa Holiga, a bartender at the Annex tells patrons getting a ticket for parking overnight is far better than getting a DUI.
Molly’s Eatery and Drinkery, 1022 W. Lincoln Highway, offers customers free overnight parking and a bus service Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The service is free and the phone number is 815-970-2401.
Jeff Dobie, owner of Fatty’s Pub and Grille, 1310 W. Lincoln Highway, pleads to his customers, “If you can’t drive, leave your car overnight. Please, by all means leave it.”
