Neptune to surf web with Ethernet

Neptune Hall will be upgrading from DSL to Ethernet next summer, said ResTech coordinator Jan Gerenstein.

The switch will take place at the same time as University Apartments, 501 N. Annie Glidden Road.

Room and board fees will not be raised due to the upgrade. The upgrade is being paid for through other funding, Gerenstein said.

Ethernet will bring a faster Internet connection to Neptune. DSL had some problems that led to the switch, Gerenstein said.

“From ResTech’s point of view, the problems are related to the administrative costs of tracking equipment and problems students have tracking the equipment,” Gerenstein said.

ResTech must provide the hub, cables, power supplies and the modem to supply students with DSL.

The DSL service currently provided by ITS will no longer be supported by the vendor as of December 2006.

Upgrading all the halls and University Apartments to Ethernet will enable ResTech to provide consistent service to all residents, Gerenstein said.

Neptune does not use Clean Access, unlike the other residence halls, but ResTech hopes to have Clean Access in Neptune this semester. All residence hall tenants pay the same technology fees.

“It’s pretty fast,” said Brandon Craig, a junior electrical engineering major. “It could be faster. The privacy issue with Clean Access is the only concern. Besides that, it’s fine.”
