Women’s golf tops WIU tourney
September 21, 2005
It’s sweet to repeat for the NIU women’s golf team.
Solid performances from the sister act of Jackie and Lisa Bailey led NIU to a repeat championship at the Western Illinois Invite. Lisa’s 155 equaled the best total score in the two-round tournament, giving her a third career tournament victory.
Jackie landed in fifth place with a 159, and Abbie Many came in sixth with a 169.
NIU has three tournament wins since 2004, its highest level of success since 1992.
NIU will compete in the Toledo Rocket Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
MEN’S GOLF FINISHES IN TOP HALF
The NIU men’s golf team finished eighth at the Kansas Invitational Monday and Tuesday. Nick Schenk and Ethan Roush tied for 19th place after three rounds with a 216. NIU shot an even-par 288 in the opening round of the 17-team tournament, but struggled to a second-round 295.
Zach Jecklin, Dan Gratton and Schenk all posted rounds of one-under-par 71 at the three-round event.
NIU next hits the links Oct. 3 and 4 at the Earl Yestingsmeier Intercollegiate in Muncie, Ind.
NIU BOOSTER HONORED
Don’t mistake the initials “GW” on Huskie football helmets as a nod to NIU running back Garrett Wolfe.
In honor of Dr. George Wilkins, “GW” will be patched on NIU football helmets for the 2005 campaign. An active participant in the community and NIU athletics fundraising, ilkins died of a heart attack on Sept. 10 at Evanston Hospital. Wilkins was said to be wearing the cardinal and black colors of NIU when he died. NIU coach Joe Novak said it was an easy choice to honor Wilkins.
“Putting his initials on our helmets is the least we could do for him and his family,” Novak said. “George is a part of our family – the Huskie family.”
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HURRICANE RELIEF
The NIU women’s basketball team is doing its part to aid Hurricane Katrina victims. The Huskies will hold a fundraiser Monday at 5 p.m. at the Convocation Center’s Victor E. Court.
Players will have 100 shots, and donors will pay the amount they pledge for each shot made. Checks can be made out to the American Red Cross.
If you’d like to make a pledge, contact Melissa Parker at 753-1492.
SWINGING IN TO ACTION
The NIU women’s tennis team will take part in the DePaul Invitational this weekend. The two-day tournament starts the fall season for the Huskies.
