Prism to host second dance

By Sarah Carnes

This year, there are 10 dances planned for Prism, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and LGBT ally organization.

Tomorrow night from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at the Best Western, 1212 W. Lincoln Highway, Prism will hold its second dance of the year. Tickets are $5.

“When you’ve had a long, stressful day, it’s fun to just relax and talk,” said Tim Rogers, a Prism representative.

According to its Web site, the dance will have free food, a live disc jockey and dancing. Anyone over 18 with a valid ID is welcome at the dance and anyone under 18 must show a valid NIU OneCard to enter. The bar will serve anyone 21 and over who presents a valid ID. More than 150 people attended the last Prism dance.

“It’s a very nice atmosphere,” said Lucy Andich, co-president of Prism. “[I like] meeting people and visiting [with them].”

And there is no need to worry about stigmas when it comes to the Prism dances.

“There is no need to be scared [to attend],” co-president Philip Engleking said. “Hopefully [people] aren’t going to make assumptions [about one’s sexuality].”

Whether lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or just supportive of the LGBT community, all are welcome.

“Getting to see people that can’t always make it to the community gatherings [is my favorite aspect],” Engleking said.

Prism’s normal meetings alternate with a community gathering every other Wednesday at 9 p.m.

During the weeks without community gathering, “Movie Night” is featured at 8:30 p.m., featuring many different films of LGBT themes and issues.
