Clubs entice students at Friday Fest
August 22, 2005
Clubs sponsored by community organizations and the Student Association competed for student attention outside the Convocation Center during Friday Fest .
Taking advantage of the opportunity to recruit new members, student organizations created fliers and held activities showcasing their organizations and events.
The Lutheran Student Fellowship continued with an advertisement plan that has been successful for the past six years.
About 6,000 complimentary water bottles were distributed during move-in week, according to Fellowship president Jenna Wright, The group considers the bottles to be one of its major avenues for advertisement.
“We label them with information and activities,” Wright said, explaining that it was a great way to raise attendance for group events.
Prism brought brightly-colored banners and free-pride bracelets to the Convo to promote awareness of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
The group pushed its ice cream social and organizational dances, and members handed out fliers along with informational articles spotlighting the LGBT Resource Center’s mentoring program, social events and study groups.
The center provides a safe environment and help for students who need it, said Andrea Drott, a member of LGBT and a counseling graduate student.
The We Care Pregnancy Center handed out roses accessorized with tags that offered free testing and counseling services.
“We want to connect with women across campus,” said Katie Mehne, the group’s executive director.
Though many groups relied on fliers or word-of-mouth to reach out to the students spilling from the Academic Convocation, the clubs that presented unique presentations along with gifts and prizes attracted the largest crowds.
