Fourteen-year NIU carpenter dies on job

Bruce Swedberg, 59, an NIU carpenter for 14 years, was found unconscious in a DuSable Hall restroom June 10 and later died at Kishwaukee Community Hospital, 626 Bethany Road.

Co-workers said Swedberg was coughing and began to feel under the weather during the morning shift. He soon excused himself to the restroom and after not hearing anything for about 15 minutes, several workers went to find him.

When he was found, CPR was administered while workers waited for paramedics to arrive.

“It’s a tragic situation,” said Bob Albanese, associate vice president of Finance and Facilities. “He was a dedicated employee.”

The temperature that Friday reached 86 degrees and the humidity was between 90 and 100 percent most of the morning.

Swedberg was a DeKalb resident, an avid hunter and a member of the Sycamore Sportsman’s Club.

“He was a good guy,” Albanese said. “I really enjoyed him.

“We’ll talk to the family in a few months, when things settle down, about dedicating a tree or bench.”
