Rob Thomas: … Something To Be

By Lindsey Rosati

From alternative rock to pop/rock, Rob Thomas is switching it up and going solo.

His debut album “… Something To Be,” is a new variation of Thomas’ signature sound. It’s a lot more pop intertwined with catchy beats.

Thomas jumped on the scene as the frontman of Matchbox Twenty in 1996. Their debut “Yourself or Someone Like You” helped put them on the map with catchy singles.

In 1999 Thomas worked on the hit single “Smooth” for the legendary Santana’s comeback. Thus sparking a new desire in Thomas.

Departing from Matchbox Twenty, Thomas wanted to put a spin on his career and go in a different direction than his previous alternative rock gig.

A veteran to the frontman duties and being a talented singer/songwriter, he paired up with John Mayer on “… Something To Be.”

The first single “Lonely No More” has a fresher sound. The chorus is hard to get out of your head, thanks to Thomas’ playful and energetic lyrics.

The album has some hits and misses but, “Ever the Same,” “Something To Be” and “Problem Girl” are the most recognizable sounds for fans of Thomas.
