NIU places moratorium on Greek activities following altercation outside of fraternity
May 9, 2005
NIU’s Greek community was altered in late February when the university officially suspended the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and placed an indefinite moratorium on all Greek houses following an altercation in which one person was stabbed by an NIU student.
DeKalb police said Matthew W. Bergquist of DeKalb was trying to gain entry into a party at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house, 919 Greenbrier Road, when he became involved in an altercation with a 20-year-old man. Police said the two crossed the street, where Bergquist allegedly stabbed the man in the upper arm and back.
The altercation was apparently regarding Bergquist being denied entry to the party, said DeKalb police Sgt. Jason Leverton. The victim of the stabbing was not an NIU student and neither the victim nor Bergquist were members of the SAE fraternity.
Shortly following the incident, representatives from several Greek organizations met with several NIU administrators in a closed-door meeting to discuss a course of action related to the incident. The purpose of the meeting was to provide an open discussion for students involved in the incident, said Vice President of Student Affairs Brian Hemphill after the meeting.
