Huskies salvage series

After managing only four hits in two games Saturday at Eastern Michigan, NIU softball finally decided to break out the bats Sunday.

With losses of 2-1 and 2-0, the Huskies broke out with 10 hits in their 7-1 victory in the series finale.

Despite their offensive woes in Game 1 and Game 2, the Huskies (19-14 overall, 4-4 MAC) had dominant performances from their pair of junior pitchers.

Lindsey LaChiana and Paige Granath both threw complete games and allowed two runs apiece.

However, the lack of run support equaled losses for both pitchers.

“Both of our pitchers pitched well enough to win,” NIU coach Donna Martin said. “Lindsey and Paige both kept us in position to win throughout both games.”

In Game 3, the Huskies got the offense to go with their pitching and defense.

The Huskies put up four runs in the first two innings and added three more in the top of the seventh to put EMU (9-13, 5-5) away.

“It was good for us to put all three parts of our game together, which is key,” Martin said. “Lindsey pitched a gem, and it was encouraging to see our adjustments from Saturday.”

LaChiana pitched her second complete game of the series and allowed only four hits to go with eight strikeouts.

The Huskies were on a three-game losing streak before Sunday, which Martin was happy to see end.

“It’s always huge to stop a losing streak and get a notch in the left side of the column,” Martin said. “It’s not good to go that long without a win.”
