Huskies short of big hits

Big players make big plays in big moments.

Unfortunately, the NIU softball team only came up big one time on Saturday against Bowling Green. On Sunday, it was too little, too late.

Junior Kelly Drozd tied Saturday’s first game at one in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly. But BG had one out and a runner on second when senior second baseman Megan Meyer missed an attempted backhand at a ground ball.

BG’s D.J. DeLong scored from second and the run that proved to be the game winner.

“That’s midseason stuff,” NIU coach Donna Martin said. “We’ve only been on our field four times. Two practices and two games. We’ll get better as we play on it.”

In Saturday’s second game sophomore Lauren von Holst made the impact for the Huskies.

Down 3-1 in the bottom of the second, von Holst blasted a three-run homer to right-center that became the eventual game winner in NIU’s 4-3 victory.

Batting .294, von Holst has been in and out of the line-up, spending time as a catcher, designated player and a pinch hitter. However, she doesn’t mind having a permanent role on the team.

“She comes in and gets her work done,” Martin said. “She takes her turn at catching and does a nice job.”

With the series tied at one, the Huskies needed one more player to step up to the plate on Sunday.

Sophomore Kelly Park had the only hit of the game for NIU until the sixth inning.

Down 4-0, Park collected the Huskies’ next hit as well with NIU’s second three-run homer to right-center on the weekend.

However, Park’s first home run on the season went for naught. With no outs, the Huskies were primed to make a run, but BG collected three straight outs and the win to take the weekend series 2-1.
