New executives should show some humility
April 1, 2005
It is my sincere hope that next year’s SA executives are truly humbled as Student Trustee-elect Andrew Nelms claims, but their behavior thus far has not reflected that statement to me. I was shocked to read of the childish “na na na na” chant the elected sang upon winning the election and appalled by the election signs that had been painted over with proclamations of victory near DuSable. It is one thing to celebrate a victory, it is another to rub it in.
Instead of alienating those actually dedicated enough to run for student government, the victors should be reaching out to students, encouraging them to be involved in the political process and on campus in general. The incoming executives should be working hard to restore integrity to a body that students don’t respect enough to pay mind to.
When only around five percent of students take time to vote, calling a victory of any margin a “mandate” is, quite frankly, asinine and pretentious.
