The NIU men’s tennis team kept up its winning ways at home with its 5-2 win over Valparaiso on Friday.

The Huskies (9-6) won four of six singles matches to improve to 4-0 at their home-away-from-home in Rockford.

Seniors Willy Gali and Erick Martinez won their singles matches, while freshmen Mark Tate and Alex Friesen did their part and were victorious.

Senior Willy Gali improved to 21-4 on the season, while Alex Friesen moved to 17-7 for the Huskies.

The Huskies will begin MAC play when they take on Buffalo on the road at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Women’s Track

Senior Alicja Czajka won a pair of events for the Huskies, who finished fifth at the 10-team Saluki Spring Classic on Saturday.

NIU scored an 80 to finish behind winner SIU, which tallied 162 points.

Czajka won the 800-meter dash with a 2:17.75, while also picking up a win in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:36.14.

Men’s & Women’s Golf

NIU golfers Ethan Roush and Lisa Bailey earned MAC Player of the Week honors for the Huskies last week.

Roush shot a 5-under par-211 to help lead the Huskies to a third-place finish at Kauai Collegiate Cup over Spring Break.

Bailey was the top Huskie finisher for the women’s team in all three of their events over break.

“What a great honor for Lisa [Bailey],” coach Pam Tyska said. “She was so steady for us in Florida. Her play was extremely consistent and considering the long lay-off for the winter, that makes her performances even more impressive.”

Women’s Tennis

The Huskies dropped both of their first two MAC games over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Huskies (4-5 overall, 0-2 MAC) were swept 7-0 by defending conference champion Marshall.

The Huskies won the top two singles matches against Miami-Ohio on Friday but lost the other four to fall 5-2 to their conference foe.
