Softball team picks up more awards
March 8, 2005
After winning the Sycamore Classic on Sunday, the NIU softball team earned a MAC Player of the Week award for the second week in a row.
On Monday, first baseman Toni Del Toro and pitcher Lindsey LaChiana were named the MAC West Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
“Lindsey just battled this weekend from start to finish,” NIU coach Donna Martin said. “She’s a competitor, and even though she didn’t have her best stuff, she kept us in a position to win games when she was in the circle.”
Last week outfielder Kelly Drozd won the award for the Huskies.
The Huskies (6-3) went 4-1 over the past week, concluding with the title in Terre Haute, Ind.
Ending on a good note
The men’s tennis team nearly swept Wright State 6-1 before beating Western Illinois 4-3 to begin a two-meet winning streak over the weekend.
The Huskies (7-5) got the weekend off to a rough start, falling 6-1 to Indiana State on Friday, but recovered for the two non-conference wins to close the week.
Willy Gali was the only Huskie to win all three of his singles matches during the three meets. The senior Barcelona, Spain native lost just one set during the wins.
Back with a bang
Off for two weeks, the women’s tennis team came back strong and picked up a 5-2 win over Illinois-Chicago on Saturday.
At No. 3 singles, Christy Svetlic picked up the only three-set victory, when she beat Melanie Humphrey 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 for the Huskies (3-3).
