Lots W, X hit hard Tuesday
March 3, 2005
NIU students at Grant Towers and University Apartments woke up Tuesday to find more than a dozen vehicles had been burglarized overnight.
University Police received at least 13 reports of vehicle burglaries Tuesday in Lots W and X.
UP Lt. Matt Kiederlen said there are no suspects in the burglaries.
Kiederlen had no comment on how burglars gained entry to the vehicles, but said the burglaries are all believed to be related.
“We had patrol in the area, unfortunately there appeared to be a time frame that we missed,” Kiederlen said.
Kiederlen said the department made changes in personnel levels and policing to prevent future incidents.
Five of the 13 cases have been administratively closed, which means no further evidence may be available in the case.
Sam Avraham said his son Joseph’s Ford Explorer was one of the vehicles broken into that night. Burglars shattered the passenger side window and took a skateboard and radar scanner.
While the total losses came to about $400, that doesn’t include the effort of filing reports and repairing the vehicle, Avraham said.
“It’s time consuming,” Avraham said.
Avraham said he felt little reassurance when UP told him the campus was one of the safest around.
“When it happens to you, that doesn’t help,” Avraham said.
Burglary to a motor vehicle is punishable by three to seven years in prison and up to $25,000 in fines.
