After winning its second consecutive game Sunday, the NIU men’s basketball team received more good news when forward Todd Peterson was named the MAC West Player of the Week on Monday.

For the week, the junior averaged 15 points and 5.5 rebounds a game for the Huskies, who went 2-0.

“Todd has become a more complete player this season,” coach Rob Judson said. “He got to the free throw line 13 times on Sunday and made all of them. He’s doing some nice things and is helping this team play its best basketball down the stretch in a variety of ways.”

The award was the first for Peterson and the first for NIU since Marcus Smallwood won it in December of 2003.

Close but no cigar

NIU senior Alicja Czajka finished second in a pair of events as the NIU track and field team finished ninth out of 12 teams at the MAC Championships over the weekend.

NIU finished with 28 points, while Akron won with 97.

In the 3,000 meter run, Czajka ran a 9:43.43, to finish behind champion Jill Scully of Ball State.

Czajka was just two seconds behind Scully in the 5,000 meter run, finishing in 17:11.79 for NIU.

All in all, Czajka tallied 16 points for NIU, the most by a Huskie at the MAC Championships since the sport was reinstated at NIU for the 1999-00 season.

Centerfielder Kelly Drozd went 2-for-3 in Sunday’s game to lead the Huskies (2-2).
